art inspired: picasso's blue period

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

If the entire staff of Net-A-Porter, Nina Garcia and the front row contingent are any indication, {the collective ensemble yesterday at NY Fashion Week wore 50 shades of cobalt} then no doubt cobalt blue is the chicest color of Fall '12. And if you've been following along with the shows, then you know that all shades of sea blue will carry right into Spring '13.

Today's art inspired fashion post draws on Picasso's blue period, that lasted between 1901 and 1904. Picasso said that the suicide of his friend influenced his paintings and as his depression worsened, he began painting the poor and the outcast, using increasing hues of blue. The paintings from this period  became some of Picasso's most popular works, although he suffered financially as well as emotionally during this period.

i would do those nicholas kirkwoods and your wilde shopper all day long---is how i would do blue.
it always makes me shake my head how blue is associated with sadness. it makes me so happy. blue being one of my favorite colors, i wear it when i'm feeling extra perky or content.

I'm excited about cobalt blue for fall. I bought a blue jacket last year that I don't really know what to pair with so I avent worn it much. I think I'll be able to wear it with black now that it's the cool color combo.

I admire Picasso, I saw his works in many museums all around the world and it still takes my breath away every single time I look at any of his masterpieces. Just the same way my heart stopped beating for a second when I saw all the blue gorgeousness here;)Electric blue is an amazing colour b/s it suits truly everybody! Love the dress and your bag the most!

It's amazing how something so tragic can bring such beauty and inspiration. I love all the different phases Picasso went through. To see his life and emotions through his work is pretty incredible. He bled his life into his art...

I'm glad cobalt is in this season. It's such a striking color. I don't think I even own any cobalt, but I'm hoping to change that fact soon. :)

Blue in any shade is my favourite color and Picasso is my favourite artist. Picasso's Blue period is so emotional. I like the Joseph blazer, the Stella McCartney sweater and the Maryjo Tote. So stylish. Thank you for your comment on my blog.

These works convey so much emotion and are so different to the cubist paintings that people usually associate with Picasso. Blue is such an expressive colour and I'm glad to see it trending. That Tibi dress is beautiful, and pairs perfectly with your Wilde tote. Ah one can always dream..

Oh, I love these posts. You connect art with fashion in such a wonderful way. Do blue jeans count? :) I'm wearing a pair today with a Banana Republic navy tee and Armani pearly grey heels. Those Nicholas Kirkwood boots are gorgeous, they would go so well with your Wilde Shopper. :)

I have never thought or associated blue with depression (gray or black sound more like it). Blue was not my color until last year when i first spotted cobalt blue color, it captured my eyes and i have loved blue since.

It is amazing how all of us have a color associated with pain and death...well, I think for most of us is black, but Picasso went for blue, well, for me electric blue is a joyful color, full of energy that I will always wear, plus it underlines my eyes, so...I will for sure follow this indications, Mary Jo. I am so glad that you present us little by little the life of these amazing artists :* Have a beautiful weekend!

I think that royal blue could be one of my favourite accessories colour: it's bold, but at the same time it's kind of a neutral because it could go with everything. Congratulations on your new collection!
