art inspired: max kurzweil, woman in a yellow dress
Wednesday, August 15, 2012

With just a few weeks of summer left, this week's art inspired fashion post considers Austrian painter and print maker Max Kurzweil, who painted Woman in A Yellow Dress in 1899 and is one of the most significant artists in the Viennese Secessionist movement after Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. A stunning portrait of his wife, the painting is a study in harmony, from the balance of her languid pale arms to the blue and green couch, complimenting the yellow dress and reflecting Kurzweil's Impressionism and plein-air painting influences.
Here are a few sunny options for the end of summer:

Middle row: Alberta Ferretti Sunflower Halter neck silk dress $892; Elie Saab Lace Waist dress $1,956; Donna Karan Butterscotch Twist draped dress $1,795; 10 Crosby Derek Lam $277. Look at you-- back with more yellow!!!! It seems as though it is on the brain! And with inspiration like this painting and the polish it is no wonder....
PS- thank you for your sweet comments about my announcement!
I wish I had more time to read up on art history. This painting is just so captivating, I feel like I could stare at it for hours. Probably has something to do with the study in harmony that you mentioned. I feel inspired to recreate it in a photo.
Did you ever get to watch your dad jump? We are at Fort Campbell too, my husband is also a paratrooper. What a small world :)

I think that yellow is a great color to use as an accent. I love adding little pops of it throughout an outfit.

I would love to wear more yellow, I have one dress and that's all, I think lemon is my best tone.
Mary Jo - a lesson on the difference between shade and tone please.
I love every shade of yellow, including mustard and its missing from my wardrobe, have to remedy that!
I love yellow dresses! This selection is perfect.
Yellow is one of my favourite colours other than turquoise so I adored this inspiration. What a lovely illustrated painting

LOVE the bright sunny yellows, so much fun. As a redhead I've never been able to pull off yellow sadly - I'm all over the golds but have never had any luck with le yellow. Which is a shame because all four of those dresses are absolutely stunning!

Such a sharp yellow!!!! love it!!! xxx
I LOVE gold, but yellow isn't really a color I wear - though I do adore mustard for fall. The makeup you selected is awesome; and I love the cut of the second dress. Beautiful post, Mary Jo!! :)
Such a beautiful, vibrant painting, Mary Jo! I do love yellow, because it's such a glorious, happy colour, but I've never had the courage to try it on a dress. I remember Michelle Williams in that yellow Vera Wang dress at the Oscars. She was such a show stopper. One of the best red carpet moments ever. I'm falling for those Rebecca Minkoff wedges. xo

Dear Mary Jo, first of all, I would like to tell you that your new nail polish selection is absolutely beautiful! Such a great variety of shades...I've never worn yellow until last year and than the mustard tone has been growing on me and it's a very stylish colour, which can be worn every season!
