art inspired: john william waterhouse, the mermaid

John_William_Waterhouse_-_Mermaid
As we move into the 3 last weeks of summer, most of us are now thinking of ways to repair our hair and skin from the ravages of the surf and sand, and British painter John William Waterhouse's "The Mermaid," seemed like the perfect inspiration. Waterhouse borrowed from the Impressionists as well as worked in the style of the Pre-Raphaelites, who were all about returning to the detailed and complex compositions and saturated colors of early Gothic Italian and Flemish art.
Today's art inspired fashion post looks to the silvery mermaid tail, and the earth's most soothing beauty products for ways to ride the tide into fall.

I always love metallic--- regardless of the time of year! I feel like I didn't take advantage of summer this year, which makes me sad! But, by the same token, my hair has been rather healthy lately..... wonder if there is a correlation!

I've been wanting a Diptyque candle for the longest! I'm excited for the metallic trend. I saw a cool metallic moto jacket earlier this week.

Hope you're having a great week also Mary Jo!

I love these "inspired by art" posts you do. So cool. And to answer your question about the metallic trend: I think that with any trend (and any article of clothing really), it all depends on how you wear it. Styling and attitude.

Was just wondering how to do the silver trou thing and that pale pinky nudey shirt is perfect with it. Hope your photo shoot went well the other day.

Oh I'm so glad you chose to do a post on this particular painting. It is one of my favourites! Personally, I can't wait for the metallics trend to pick up steam so there will be more affordable pieces available on high street. That shade of lipstick you picked is so rich and luxurious. I've been looking for something like that!

I've long liked wearing rich metallics during the end of summer. It seems to make sense in the crazy heat somehow.

A metallic clutch or some silver ballerina flats are about the only ways i see myself wearing the trend. (two seasons ago I wouldn't even have considered it). The lipstick colour is insanely beautiful! xo
