art inspired: walk like an egyptian

embalm-1

Today I thought it would be fun to celebrate our 51st art inspired fashion post with a painting from the pyramids. This one shows Anubis, the Eygptian god of the dead (represented as a man with a jackal's head) in the throes of embalming, and it seemed like a perfect inspiration for our Summer '12 season of gold accessories, dramatic eyes, bronze makeup, strappy gladiator sandals, and cuffs galore. I also thought Anubis' striped tee with a soft blue sweater worn preppie-style around the shoulders was a genius pairing with his gold skirt.

Lately I've been fascinated by all things Egyptian. If you think back on what you may have seen of ancient Egyptian art, no matter the time period, it all seems to follow a certain geometric similarity as if it obeyed one law--the legs and head of the character were always drawn in profile, with the eye drawn in full, while the body is always seen from the front.  It's as if no one wanted anything different and there was no importance on being 'original'. All that was good and beautiful in the age of the pyramids is just as excellent a thousand years later. It makes you wonder how we got so far from this concept...

I've always loved Ancient Egypt and when I was younger I actually remembered a lot of details and stories by heart with a particular love and admiration for Nefertiti and that sculpture portrair of her.
You know, you can find a beautiful cream and gold dragonfly cuff on Massimo Dutti website - it could fit the brief, but cost less then £50. :)

What a surprise Mary Jo - another fabulous post.
I love that skirt you chose. I want it, only no sunshine here, so it would be rather difficult to wear it in the London showers.

Have a lovely rest of the week.

This is fabulous Mary Jo! I've always been so fascinated with Egypt. Ever since I was little. I went to see the King Tut exhibit at the Discovery Times Square last year and it was so fabulous to get to see everything that I had dreamed of as a child in person.

And I'm just loving this look you pulled together. It's perfect! I really want {actually NEED} the skirt, cuff and strappy sandals :)

Happy Wednesday! xoxo

Love how you've put the casual blue t-shirt with the brass-gold skirt, genius. I considered buying that Marc Jacobs version of a leather gold skirt but was clueless as how to wear it and took it back. Egypt is my favourite place ever, spent six weeks there when I was single.

Love the egyptian history bit, but the fashion things?
Then I looked more closely.

£275 for a pair of bloody sandals?
The most I've ever paid for shoes was £85 2 years ago, and I still wear them to work most days. Those sandals look as if they wouldn't protect you from any part of the natural world, while my shoes could easily deflect a strike from the deadly Bushmaster snake. (I know that there's no snakes here in new Zealand, but it's the principle of the thing)
And just look at the design closely. They're based on jandals (or thongs as the Brits would say) and that bit poking through between your toes is not the most comfortable method of securing soles to feet.

Look, I know I'm just a guy, but ...£825 for a skirt??

I just don't believe it!

*turns purple*

Sigh.

*retires depressed at the state of the world*

I've always been fascinated with Ancient Egypt and still want to learn more about it. I loved it when I visited the Egypt section at the British Museum. A cuff from Hallhuber that I bought last year in Berlin is as far as I'm willing to go when it comes to gold items in my wardrobe for now. :)

Yes. Yes. Yes! The heavy jet black eyeliner, the metallic gold accents... it's all working for me. I've never thought about Ancient Egyptian art being a bit redundant, but that's so true, especially for a people who were so innovative with their monuments and statues. It seems like their art was merely used for story telling.

I've never been in Egypt but it's definitely on my list! I admire it's past and culture. I don't have so many Egyptian pieces in my wardrobe but once I got a beautiful golden bracelet with a head of Nefertiti on it. Your post made me think about it:)
