art inspired: alex katz, red smile

redsmile

The graphic punch of an Alex Katz piece is unmistakable; his portraits are some of the most recognizable images in contemporary art. His model and muse for half a century has been his wife, Ada, who appears in over 250 of his paintings. I thought her classic American white blouse and bright red lips were a perfect jumping off place for this week's art inspired fashion post.

Along with finding the perfect white tee, having a really good (meaning versatile, soft and/or crisp, go-anywhere) white shirt for summer is right up there on my list of summer-must-haves.

Do you have a favorite white shirt for summer?
Please tell me about it!

p.s. What do you think about a red lip?
{I'm hooked on NARS Jungle Red}

Cool! I do have a short-sleeved white shirt but mostly use it as sunblock / to cover my shoulders a bit :-o
Should probably get a nicer one!

Red lips - hell yeah!

Mary Jo, you speak my language. I have one short-sleeved Tommy Hilfiger white shirt I've been sporting this summer, but I can't say it's the perfect white shirt. Although great in fabric (cotton) and cut, I've always preferred long sleeves in a white shirt, even in summer, to roll them up.
I don't think there's a better accessory than a red lipstick for this timeless piece. :)

I love a sultry red lip and one can never go wrong with NARS. The classic white shirt doesn't fascinate me, since it's standard work wear for men. I certainly wouldn't splurge on one.

I actually am hunting down a new white button-down right now. Really great for dressing up & down!

Fun painting! And how romantic that his wife is his muse!

I know it's a total fashion staple but I don't actually own a white button down. It just doesn't work well with my aversion to ironing and whenever I wear white I seem to be a total dirt magnet. I think it looks so chic on other people though :)

I have a few white button-down linen shirts that I bought at Forever 21 (for under $15 each!) a few years ago that I absolutely love. Sometimes I tie the ends to make it a crop top; other times I tuck them into my shorts or skinny jeans. No matter how they are styled they always look so polished and pretty.

P.S. I always do a heavy eye, so I stick with nude lips myself; but I do love how red lips look on others! :)

I love white shirts as you know, just the feeling of putting one on is marvelous to me :))) In fact, I found a long forgotten one in my wardrobe as I was cleaning it out and it still fits perfectly. Nice to wear in the summer when things get humid. I think I'll wear it this week with my tulle skirt!! I love red lipstick, I'm still looking for one that I enjoy on myself though. I always think it looks so classy. Reminds me of being little and the older ladies putting it on and letting me have a little on too ;) It's just so nice. Hope you are having a wonderful week :) xox

ohhh Alex Katz...this takes me back to grad school :) White shirts...gosh, now I feel the need to shop even more for the perfect button down. I think Madewell would be a good choice. They don't disappoint often.

I have a favourite white silk blouse, sadly its much too sheer for winter, and covering it in a jacket seems like a crime ;)
Love red lipstick!

Mary Jo, thank you for introducing me to this artist: the portrait and its vibrant colours are absolutely stunning! I have so many white shirt and tops...all my favourite! Regarding red lips, I am a fan, but a recent one...since I discovered the right shade for me - MAC's Ruby Woo - I understood the charm of this colour: you can wear the simplest of the outfits and a red lipstick can make the overall look very glamorous.
