The mix of sophisticated and low-brow is a recurring theme in both art or fashion, and nothing symbolizes this marriage better than the humble safety pin, immortalized by designers like Tom Binns, Alexander McQueen and Versace among many others. This week's Art Inspired Fashion Post (#49) looks to Steve Gianakos, who uses cartoon allegories to portray the absurdity of the human condition. His work is included in several museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Guggenheim Museum. Gianakos' drawing, She Could Hardly Wait, is part of the Exquisite Corpses: Drawings and Disfigurations exhibition at MOMA, on view at MOMA through July 9, 2012.

this is such a darling post. I love the quirkiness of the safety pin in fashion and art. From being strictly a form of aid in need to being an artsy status symbol, I think the safety pin is (so to speak) quite cool. =)

Gorgeous dress! And who could forget that safety pin dress worn by Liz Hurley, worn with barely any makeup and with no other jewelery it was fabulous. Too many diapers in my past for me to be tempted though...

First, I LOVE that art piece - there is something so appealing about it.

I think this is my favourite outfits of all you've done so far. Absolutely in love with everything. And yes, I'd definitely wear a safety pin, especially in gold coloured metal, slightly oversizes, perhaps with a pearl accent on it. x

You're quite the fashionista. Loved your interview with Jeffrey...think that was his name. What a talent. Also liked his comment about fashion being second nature. That's how it's become for me, but it took longer than it should have! I think height lets you pull off so much more when it comes to fashion. Looks that would just weigh you down, if you were shorter.
