art inspired: tamara de lempicka: kizette on the balcony

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

Today's Art Inspired Fashion post looks to Tamara de Lempika, a bohemian socialite who is one of the most memorable artists of the 1920s "Arts Decoratifs" or Art Deco style. After showing her first 28 paintings, she quickly became one of the most fashionable portrait painters of her generation among the haute bourgeoisie, painting socialites and titled patrons. Even now, her work is collected by celebrities like Madonna, Jack Nicholson and Barbara Streisand. This painting was originally titled "Girl On Balcony" and few people at the time realized that Tamara had a daughter Kizette, or that her daughter was her model.

Talk about trusting your style! Tamara de Lempicka is the poster girl for a modern creative and independent life filled with beautiful clothes, travel and riches.

Among a hundred paintings, you could recognize mine,
my goal was:
Do not copy. Create a new style,...
colors light and bright,
return to elegance in my models."

Tamara de Lempicka is one of the more fascinating artist stories; she lived a life that's still relevant and modern in many ways. With all the buzz about Baz Luhrmann's 3-D remake of The Great Gatsby on the horizon {it won't debut until Christmas 2012} and plenty of glitzy 20s drop waist dresses hitting the scene, it seems inevitable that art deco/flapper style is only going to gain fashion momentum in the coming months.

Here's our take on an updated easy breezy Easter/Lempicka inspired outfit:
