Untitled_acrylic_and_mixed_media_on_canvas_by_--Jean-Michel_Basquiat--%2C_1984-1

This week's art inspired fashion post looks to Jean-Michel Basquiat, who dropped out of high school in tenth grade and started selling homemade punk rock inspired postcards and tees on the streets of New York. He sold his first painting to Deborah Harry for $200 and within a couple of years he was the darling of the NY art world, with a meteoric rise that lasted from 1980-1987, when he overdosed from heroin at the age of 27. He had already died by the time I arrived in New York, but during the five years I lived there, it was impossible not to meet people who had known him in some capacity, and Basquiat's vibrant presence in the art world was everywhere. If you're not familiar with his work, check out this video below, it will give you a better sense about who he was.

The tribal influence is still going strong this spring, showing up in many collections from Burberry to Proenza Schouler.

I am such a big fan of his work! And I so remember that time. I always wished that I was a few years older so I could have lived in NY at that time. My dad lived in the city so I used to visit every week in high school but I didn't move to NYC until 1990 when I attended FIT. I was always so obsessed with that whole NY art scene. xoxo

What a sad story! Gosh, he was gone long before his time. So much talent and drugs took him out. He definitely left a legacy, but you just wish people like that would stay around a lot longer. Love his work and thanks for showing the video. I love the tribal look. That dress is gorgeous. I LIKEY that clutch! HaHa I was just reading your comment on my post. You are so right. I love your analogy!!! I couldn't help but chuckle. You're a great bloggie buddy! Wishing you a wonderful day! ((HUG))

Again another famous artist that I didn't know before. How tragic he died that way. It always great to see how you translate a painting to an outfit. Love that you paired bright colors with the warm, natural hues.

Love this style and love that you have added "surf" to it with the touch of aqua and yellow! I did buy a tribaley dress from Stefanel in Berlin but my husband reckons the burnt orange is not for me and the kids gave it the thumbs down. This Proenza is gorgeous though - a forever dress...

You know that art often comes from a dark cave inside us and we draw or paint perhaps what we can not touch inside ourselves this.. A lot of his work is that of a child.. I can see that early ages in his work, and how what ever was going on with him in his childhood life effected him so deeply that this is the way he showed it to the world, the down side to this world and life, is that one never really get's to work thru or transform the real issues that drove him to his death...

He had a lot of light and I think he could not let that in.. Even watching the film you see his light, but he could not....

WOW!!!
I wish I had some of his work!!! That's so cool Debbie Harry bought one of his paintings before he was well known. Another fabulous artist that dies at 27!!! Didn't Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, & Janis Joplin all die from drug overdoses at age 27?
Hope you're having a great week!!!

Thanks for sharing, Mary Jo! Jean Michel Basquiat's work is a firework of colors and expression. I've watched the film about his life (with David Bowie as Andy Warhol) by Julian Schnabel I think(?!) and was deeply touched by his life - and the way he lived it. In film they've shown one aspect when a table next to his table in a restaurant was crowded with investment banker (men in suit) and they made loud jokes about him, his look. And then he decided to pay the bill of this entire table with the strict order not to tell WHO paid for.
The film is one of my favorites.
