art inspired: matisse, woman in a purple coat
Tuesday, February 14, 2012

When I was in my teens I loved the lighter, softer colors of Matisse's earlier paintings, but lately I have warmed up to Woman In A Purple Coat, (a painting I used to think was a bit gaudy and not very pretty). This piece was one of Matisse's most developed works in his decorative style, part of the last group of oil paintings he completed before he switched exclusively to paper cut-outs in the 1950s. The saturated colors couldn't be more on trend for SS2012 if they tried!
p.s. Sorry for the late art inspired fashion post today, honestly I couldn't decide on the shoes...aren't I a typical woman on Valentine's Day?

Happy Valentine's Day style lovers!

Gorgeous!! I *need* those gorgeous wedges! I'm rockin' {if I do say so myself} hot pink skinny cords. It may be a little trite today, but I'm always a sucker for pink!
Gorgeous outfit! I think you picked a gorgeous pair of shoes to complete it.
Happy Valentine's Day, Mary Jo!

Former art history student and all, I've never seen that painting before! Wonderful! I've probably said so a million times but I really admire your ability to put together outfits based on something... else, like this!!
Ah you pulled it together so incredibly well! Love the purple and teal together.
Love those saturated colors!
It's a very nice inspiration. I love Matisse, it's a genious.
Great outfit. These pieces are so lovely.

Just stunning, I always loved the colours from this painting. I hadn't really seen anyone with a purple coat before, so I was always drawn to it!! Now I see them everywhere, but at the time, not one. She looked like a lady at ease and confidence in a way..as ladies should. Adore the clothes choices, that frilly top is so exquisite!! xox p.s. what a shame you didn't get to use the guitar, it's a great instrument!
Love that coat!

That's glorious Mary Jo, oh and I might e wearing that pink dress when I meet you! Oh and I love your new pink snake print bags, I'm such a big fat non achiever next to you!
Now that is a lot of color!!!! What a fun inspiration :)
Haha yes that's typically women behaviour indeed, sounds familiar;) I love the colors in the painting but the paintings itself feels very bold. I like that you've translated the woman into a modern version with this outfit.
I actually have always loved the lighter, softer Matisse paintings as well but I am definitely drawn to this. It's so bold and I just love the combination of vibrant colors.
This look is just perfect! All the way to the tips :)
xoxo
