art inspired: de kooning, pink angels

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

The gorgeous shades of pink, peach and goldenrod of William de Kooning's Pink Angels became this week's inspiration, as it's impossible for me to stop thinking about how the tiny Italian sub-trend of pastels for FW '12 has been thrown front and center with the dramatic Jil Sander show. What does this means for the otherwise more black-heavy-than-usual Fall wardrobe? And where will cotton candy pastels fit into the black/cobalt/red theme so staunchly established during NY Fashion week?

TrustYourStyleArtInspireddeKooning

De Kooning's oil and charcoal Pink Angels, {1945} is the point where he rejected traditional figurative painting, dismembering the human form in a style compared to the meshing of Picasso and Gorky. It's all the more remarkable for being simultaneously violent, mythical and surrealist, without any direct reference to these considerations. Just as Pink Angels is considered to be one of de Kooning's landmark paintings, Raf Simons' final collection for Jil Sander is a culmination of 7 years of consumate designing, and my prediction is that it will be creating waves in the fashion world that will only begin to be pieced together as its influence emerges in street fashion next September.

So tell me: will you be team heavenly angels or team dark side come next fall?

Below are a few pieces to tide us through the long spring/summer season into the promise of a soft and pretty fall. You can find most of this wardrobe at Amazon and begin to piece together the outfit.

I really liked the fact that there are so many interesting trends in terms of silhouettes and colours and I think I would love to try them all (of course, not everything at the same time...)! Mary Jo, you created another beautiful pastel look!

I already love Raf Simons' collection's influence. And you found its equivalent in painting too, as you wonderfully succeed in every art inspired post. I've been trying more and more to transition from the dark colours of the cold season towards softer shades and even pastels. So far I've done so by the power of accessories, scarves and a three-toned bowling bag (a combination of coral, green and cream). Maybe I will be bold enough to wear something more next fall. I know I can rely on all the street style inspiration out there. xo

ha ha ha Mary Jo you really made me laugh! I hope that the 'fringe accident' didn't cause any real damage. Not onto the issue at hand, I really never owned a lot of pink items before, but looking at your collage makes CRAVE these soft hues (especially those pants, the BF blazer, the bag and those omg-lipsticks). I guess this makes me part of team heavenly angels! x
