art inspired: john singer sargent, lady agnew

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Tis the season of the white dress and the white gown, so I just couldn't resist featuring John Singer Sargent's Lady Agnew for this week's art inspired fashion post.

An American artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian era luxury, Sargent loved intelligent, strong and confident women, and despite the romantic style of his times, in many ways had a modern sensibility. In keeping with that spirit, here is an updated outfit for Ms. Agnew:

set

Alexander McQueen winter white gown, $3,115 - matchesfashion.com; Sergio Rossi Jeweled Platform Sandal $920; Gucci Monogrammed cotton-blend scarf, $330; Majolie Collections Diamond and Pink Opal Pendant Necklace, $575

Truth be told, this fashion post was really inspired by the white dress to end all white dresses, the gown from Chanel's new pre-Fall 2012 collection. To quote a certain person, "I. Die."...

Will you be wearing winter white this holiday season?

I love this post. What a fun way to find inspiration. I'm far too clumsy to every pull off a white dress without spilling all over it. But I love what you've come up with.

Beautiful!! I adore winter white and wore a version of it to my #Jingletweet party last week. Ralph Lauren wool crepe pants with a taupe-y feather patterned, fur trimmed Michael Kors chiffon top!! The Chanel is gorgeous!!

Love the white with that violet scarf. Reminds me of Bill Cunningham New York when he says of one woman that she's like a Sargent painting...

Beautiful gown! It's very similar to my wedding dress minus the sleeves. John Singer Sargent was the best at portraits.

I just saw this painting re-done on tv using a celebrity here to sit for it. It's a gorgeous painting!! And this white dress is amazing, I have a thing for white..although I haven't worn much of it with little hands here to wipe all over it, hehe :)

Oh, I probably won't be in any all-white outfits this winter. I do have a great winter white purse and a new pleather jacket in a nice bone color though! Those have been making the rounds for sure.

Love the post and that painting!
