art inspired: pierre-auguste renoir, the two sisters
Tuesday, November 1, 2011

Two Sisters, painted in 1881 and later given its second title (On the Terrace) by its first longtime owner, dealer Paul Durand‑ Ruel, is considered to be one of the highlights of Renoir's career. Much has been said about the sweet gaze of the younger sister and of course, the older girl's beauty. To be honest, it was her glowing scarlet hat that inspired me this week as I contemplated my most recent obsession. Sad but true, I am a victim of extreme Gucci Trilby hat love this fall, and can't seem to shake it from my mind. I put together a few other perfectly acceptable options, but still my heart beats for the Trilby.

Do you plan to wear a hat this fall, or do you prefer to just enjoy a hat on someone else?
P.S. For a glimpse of a real-life Renoir, check out today's post at ON PCH.

I have to say that I am so enamored with this painting, Mary Jo. It is absolutely breathtaking.
And I love the fact that you used it for inspiration in selecting an assortment of stunning fall hats. Gorgeous post! :)
This is such a beautiful post, Mary Jo! Renoir is one of my favourite painters, in fact I'm an avid admirer of the Renoir family, as Jean Renoir is one of my favourite directors. The influence of his father's paintings is so obvious in his movies, he loved filming outdoors and he had such an eye for the most beautiful locations. I prefer the Trilby too, but I also like the Eugenia Klim one. I wish I could find a similar one, because, to answer your question, I would love to wear one this autumn. :)

The drawing is awesome! I really like your selection of hats...very chic and classy!
The Trilby is fantastic---- and I love how it compliments the Renoir painting so perfectly.

I'm not the biggest hat fan but I completely understand why you are in love with the Gucci hat! It's gorgeous. I think the brim of the hat is what really gives it the edge over the look-a-likes.
Thank you :). This is very inspirational! I followed you..Would you like to follow back?

Renoir is magical..love getting lost in those dreamy colours and movement! A trilby hat is wonderful, I have a vintage one sitting on a phrenology head in my hallway :) I'm a bit smitten with the feather ones, but the bow one also catches my eye :) I moved to Scotland in December 2000, I've been here ever since. My husband is from Scotland, although he lived in England when we met & we lived there for a short period before moving here :) Despite the rainy days, this country is marvelous & beautiful and so rich with history and wonder. I love it so, it's become home. The people are also so passionate about their country too, which is beautiful to see :) I'd love to have Mackintosh chairs, I sat in them at one of the tea houses and just didn't want to leave, hehe :) He's made a big impression on me since I moved here & wanted to share it, seeing it up close always captures me! xo Kizzy
I dont think hats have left my head this winter - adore the eugenia kim and now i want this colour gucci too - greedy moi?? xx

Beautiful inspiration~ I adore confident ladies who wear their fab hats!
I love Renoir. I have 2 (not real, of course). ;)
Hat-wise, I'd say if you love it THIS much, get it - don't try replacing it with alternatives, it's not going to work. Yes, it's expensive, but you'll likely wear it for years and it'll make you feel beautiful and happy (so basically, "you can't buy happiness" saying goes out of the window in this case ;) )
Personally, I adore trilbys very much and have two. Wear them from time to time, but not as often as I probably should.
And the painting... He is one of my favourite artists, so whenever I see his work, the colours melting into each other in the most perfect way, I just melt and enjoy.

That painting is gorgeous...and the color on the hats is perfect!
That painting is stunning and I adore hats. My mom is British so she wears them all the time:) Muah, sweetie.
obsessed with hats and the Gucci Trilby has been on my list! xo
I look a complete prat in a hat, but LOVE seeing them on others. I once made the mistake of wearing a brown felt number with a linen suit and its tipped so weirdly I looked completed mulleted. The Gucci one is fantastic
omg - I was just given a hat this afternoon by a portrait model! It's more of a summer hat, though, a wide straw hat with a green band, but I'll rock it a little bit along with a very long, black wool sweater and green tights.
Ah Renoir here too!!! I so love his work and this one in particular, in fact. I was obsessed with the hats when I first discovered it years ago back in Art History class :)
xoxo
OH yes...I certainly do plan to wear a hat this fall! I love the ones you have featured here and that gucci one in bordeaux couldn't be more amazing!
great choices! i'm obsessed with hats. i just bought like at least 5 since fall started. i got a burgundy floppy one, a black feathered one and a fedora from Forever 21. then i bought almost the entire Albertus Swanpoel for Target collection :)

Nice selection May Jo, lovely hats.

love fashion ideas inspired by paintings!
beautiful!
I LOVE seeing people in hats, but I never feel cool enough to pull them off myself. These ones are so gorgeous thought and I'm swooning over the color!
These hats are adorable. If I'm not mistaken, Ann Taylor has a sweet similar one right now. :) It's funny, I always thought this painting was of a mother and daughter! Either way, it's super pretty. My parents have a print of it in their home.
Beautiful painting! The hats are a bit pricey but I want them! xoxoxoo
Wow! Great post! I love it :)
a vintage painting!!!! wow!!! they are two lovely girls and the hat is really cute... love it!!! enjoyed your blog... following you now, hjope you could visit my blog too.. kissess!!!!
Just gorgeous, Mary Jo, I love this post! I wish that I could wear the Kate Spade hat :)
I hope that you are having a lovely weekend so far...
xx, Sarah
I never leave home without a hat. I own too many. They complete any outfit and are for me a glam accessory.
i sincerely cannot remember the last time i left the house with a bare head. i have been a hat girl for years; at first just for sun precautions, but now i feel quite undressed in the daytime if i don't have a hat on.
i'm thinking i need to put miss gucci on a list for santa.
love, katie
I'd actually rather love to get a floppy hat for fall, as you know L.A. is a wear a brimmed hat year-round kind of place. Haven't seen one I love yet, but maybe I just haven't been looking.
There's a great burgundy hat at Madewell with feathers around it that you might like too, check it out. And thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog, sorry it takes me forever to get back to everyone!
