Art Inspired: Edward Ruscha, The Back of Hollywood

The bright colors of a California fall sunset are being echoed by wardrobes around the globe, but I can't help but think that there's so much more to the equation. The role of iconic California in art and fashion is playing out in a grand scale lately, with a slew of Pacific Standard Time exhibits popping up in museums and galleries all over California, not to mention fashion's return to this period with the zeal of a 70s cult convert.

TrustYourStyleArtInspirededruscha

So much of fashion's love affair with the 70s is inspired by California cool, and Ed Ruscha was smack in the middle of the scene, creating works like The Back of Hollywood, which is layered with color and meaning. The scale of the piece, literally a reference to CinemaScope's size and saturated colors, the subject dealing with the age-old issues of glamour and illusion, and the insider nod to a landscape piece melding with Ruscha's visual language of text, makes this piece created in 1977, as relevant now as it ever was.

What could be a better ode to this piece than the smoking suit, with shades of a film noir Hollywood detective - as popular and chic this season as when it burst on the scene in the 70s, echoing film stars from the late 30s.

Details: Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture -1: Le Rouge $30; Jennifer Ouellette Stiletto Petite Fedora $315; Valentino Leather Gloves $345; Stella McCartney Flora velvet tuxedo jacket $1,975; Prada Nappa Gaufre Clutch Bag $1,025; Vionnet Suede and satin ankle boots $1,055; Gucci Silk crepe de chine blouse $750; Gucci Bootcut velvet tuxedo pants $750.
