art inspired: matisse, the red studio

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

This luscious red painting is considered an important transition in art from representational to expressionism; the fiery color and naive flatness expressing more about the process of making art than the still life. I've always loved how Matisse used the blank canvas to outline the images and of course the peek into his studio, which he gave us long before bloggers were posting glimpses into work spaces.

No doubt we're having red moment in fashion, but I have yet to see more than a handful of brave souls making the red from head-to-toe leap. One of the best ways to pull off this monochromatic look is by mixing textures.

Beautiful stuff!
And I love that Matisse kind of blogged :D
Not sure I would brave the red head to toe; I'm afraid it would make me disappear? However, I do have bright red tights along with a black coat and a new yellow purse and feel rather colorful that way! Hmm, should take some pics of that.

OMG, how much I love this selection!! I don't know why but this season I am so into red clothing!! The fur hat is breathtaking! Today I saw a really really beautiful sweater at the store next to my office and I think I'll go buy it! :))

Have a great day, honey!!

I absolutely love that red wool coat. It makes me think of the one Blair Waldorf wore on Gossip Girl - so pretty!

P.S. I have yet to invest in a fall hat myself; and am unsure of whether I will or not. Hats don't always work for me. :/

My favourite colour ever! It is always in fashion,in my opinion.
And i'm afraid i am one of those people who comfortably wears a red outfit, head to toe. Literally head to toe, red hair, red toe nails :-)

To be honest, no, I'm not. I do admire those bold enough to wear red from head to toe and I've seen a few fabulous looks. I agree that mixing textures is one of the keys to pull off this outfit. :)

I love Matisse. HOWEVER, I really don't wear red. I think I own one red skirt and a DVF dress that is red and white. That's it. And to add insult to injury, I am not sure when I wore the red skirt last....

I loved how he would give us a peak inside his world too. It is like what bloggers do nowadays :)

Love the red head to toe. I've never done it but will be this Saturday for Halloween. Let's see if I can pull it off some other time :)

Red is such a hot color but like you said, all red is a bit tricky to pull off but I think it is all about mixing textures and you will nail the look...

no i am not, but I do love the whole outfit! I would love to see my sister in this outfit. She has black hair and she would look gorgeous in all red. I on the other hand, with red hair not so gorgeous in all red

also, love the textures of suede and satin.

Hi Mary Jo. :) I love Matisse. In fact, when I had a color consulting business a few years ago, I called it Matisse Color Consulting.

Beautiful collection of reds, Mary Jo! Sorry I've been so out of touch. I do think of you and wonder how you're doing. xo

Love your segue from the Matisse to the fashion!! I could never do the head to toe red but would certainly admire someone who successfully could!!

Hmmm I am not sure if I can do red head to toe. I supposed a red cocktail dress but definitely not a suit, I think it may be too overwhelming on me.
