art inspired: gustav klimt, golden adele

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Who knew that this gold encrusted portrait of the thin and elegant woman who loved partying with intellectuals, artists, and musicians would have such a tumultuous history? 'Golden Adele' was created during the best period of Gustav Klimt's career and exemplified his quest for erotic ecstasy and glamour that his subject Adele so admired him for. It took three years and over one hundred sketches to bring this three-dimensional shimmering masterpiece to life, and it bears all sorts of mysteries in its Byzantine mosaic background, including Adele's intitials 'AB" everywhere. It was also rumored but never proven that Adele, the wife of a wealthy sugar industry baron, had a long affair with Klimt.

Adele Bloch-Bauer I, or 'Golden Adele', is often referred to as the Austrian Mona Lisa. The centerpiece of the Bloch-Bauer's collection, it was confiscated by the Nazis and later bought by a gallery in Vienna in 1941. In 2006, a court decision attributed the ownership of the painting to Maria Altmann, the niece of the Bloch-Bauers, who then sold the painting for 135 million dollars to Ronald Lauder for his Neue Galerie in New York City. It seems fitting that the lady was ensconced in gold, the ultimate party girl color, and as luck would have it, it's the color du jour for party girls everywhere this fall.

The painting has so much more depth to it, now that I know the story behind it. I sometimes forget to take the time and learn about art that way. And Mary Jo, that leather coat is to die for. Right out of The Matrix. I love it.
