Marilyn Minter is one of my favorite artists because she captures the dark side of fashion through art in a way that gets to me every bit as much as what Alexander McQueen did through clothing. I've written about her a number of times during the past few years, and thought "Climber," although not as gutter mud splattered as some of her other shoe pieces, expresses the irony of our love-hate relationship with iconic shoes.
This is a Marilyn Minter quote from five years ago, and it still sums up the ambiguity of fashion for me, for all of us: "It's more about...how the pleasure we feel as a viewer is ultimately about constant failure...It's in the moment when everything goes wrong."

marilyn minter has always been an idol of mine. especially since she paints with her fingertips with enamel on metal sheets. have you ever seen one of her pieces in real life? they are stunning.
