art inspired: lucian freud's girl with a white dog

This week's art inspired fashion post looks to Lucian Freud, who passed away a few weeks ago. The grandson of Sigmund Freud, Lucian Freud was considered by many fans and critics to be the greatest living figurative painter of our time. Known for his muted impasto nudes and making even the most beautiful people grotesque, much has been made of the fact that he would spend whole days mixing colors without painting a stroke, or that when he did paint, he wiped his brush after every stroke. Even more talk was generated by his appearance at swank London restaurants with beautiful younger women like Kate Moss (one of his subjects) and speculation that he sired as many as 40 children (but 13 is more plausible). I'm much more impressed that in almost seven decades of painting, he never deviated from his realistic style and that he continued to paint his way in spite of trends that swung enormously in the other direction.

Girl With A White Dog (1950-1951) is a portrait of Freud's first wife, Kitty, and one of his most famous paintings. I didn't bother going a humble/accessible route with this fashion post, Lucian Freud's paintings sold in the double digit millions and finding clothes to represent a nude ended up being loosely representational at best (pardon the pun).

I may lose sleep over the gown, it is so perfect.
As for the painting.... it is grotesque and mesmerizing at the same time... (some may argue, kind of like the artist!)
Now i may not know a lot about art but i do like his work - it is strong - what i do know is fashion and that is a very beautiful outfit -xx
