art inspired: giorgione's tempest

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

With Venice on the fashion horizon, I couldn't help but turn to a Venetian Master painter for today's art inspired fashion post. Giorgio Gasparini, commonly referred to as Giorgione (Giorgio The Great) emerged along with Titan as one of the Venetian art stars of the Renaissance. Although Giorgione's career was cut short in his thirties after contracting the plague, his most mature and mysterious painting, The Tempest, began an important new tradition of landscape painting. The lush atmosphere has fascinatied viewers for centuries and controversy over multiple meanings just adds to the mysterious allure of the painting.

Aside from the literal interpretation of Alberta Ferretti's feather capelet, to my mind, nobody channeled the flesh and earth tones of Venetian high Renaissance painting better than Chloe's Fall 2011 collection.

p.s. extra credit:
Believed to have inspired Manet's Luncheon on the Grass, the much debated interpretations of The Tempest range from biblical to classic mythology, and British art critic Waldemar Januszczak makes a case for The Tempest as an interpretation of Homer's Odyssey. In case you're curious, I included the clip from his short documentary, Every Painting Tells A Story below.

These are gorgeous pictures and I like how you incorporated the masterpiece works of art along with the outfits. I am a huge chloe fan but to date, own nothing from that line... I'd love a bag but I want something more classic hope to find something for fall!

The painting is so beautiful, Mary Jo. I love Renaissance painting. And that Chloé outfit! It's the accessories I'm coveting the most, but I wouldn't say no to any other item. And you're right about the earth tones, they are definitely on my mind these days. xo

"Lush" is exactly right. it's funny, I usually don't feel as moved by old paintings as very modern ones, but I love this piece, the creaminess of her skin and the sharpness of the buildings behind. Chloe gets it so right with those tones, wish I had a posh job so could wear that blouse and trousers...
