art inspired: friederich's monk by the sea
Tuesday, August 30, 2011

"Monk by the Sea" was painted in 1809 by Casper David Friedrich, and it inspired prose by some of the great German romantic writers {although there's debate about the actual author}. It seems so fitting as we head into fall:
'It is splendid, in infinite loneliness by the shore of the sea under a cheerless sky, to stare at a limitless expanse of water; in part, this is due to the fact that one has gone there, that one must return, that one would like to cross over, that one cannot do so; that everything belonging to life is missing and that one hears one's own voice in the roar of the tide, in the billowing of the wind, in the passing of the clouds and in the lonely cry of the birds; in part it is due to a demand which is made by the heart and by the withdrawal of nature...'
Sea inspired fashion is usually associated with the summer, but I find the moody grays, blues and blacks even more interesting for the fall and winter. The foggy/stormy colors of the ocean influenced my Fall line quite a bit (more pieces here.

I also couldn't resist adding a beautiful seascape by Alex Weinstein in my artist editions collection.

Haha, I see the sea in almost everything, including this jacket featured on Closet Visit.

Can you see yourself wearing seascape colors this fall and winter?

I have always loved the colors associated with maritime fashion. The light blues, turquoises, etc. are just stunning.

Oh yes, I see myself wearing seascape colours this autumn. That beautiful, featherweight dress is my favourite piece from your fall collection as well, Mary Jo. It's so elegant and effortlessly stylish and the colour is gorgeous (grey is one of my favourite colours). xo

that painting, that quote....both got me right between the eyes, worked their way across my forehead to my ears, and now down my face and neck, relaxing everything into a softer, more relaxed version of self.

This painting is one of my dream paintings (you know what I mean, art that you think about and obsess over... or is that just me???). And I love all the clothing- esp your grey/silver dress!
Goodness that dress you are wearing is absolute perfection. So flowy and beautiful and I love the color!
Just that phrase alone..."Maritime Art"... has me reeling in inspiration.
And, that silk dress... I can see you having a complete color range of moody, misty hues. It is a fantastic, transitional piece. Well done.
I have been on a long road trip up the coast from Santa Monica to Whistler B.C. and you have mirrored all that I have seen.
Cheers!

Seascape colours, waves - absolutely, when you put it this way! And I don't even like blue colours normally. I would really love that painting if there WASN'T a person in it! Someone should paint over the monk ;)
