art inspired: john van hamersveld and southern california psychedelic

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

For anyone who grew up in Southern California, "Endless Summer" strikes an indelible chord, but John Van Hamersveld's influence and use of color extend far beyond this sunny stretch of paradise. His SoCal pop aesthetic is being mirrored in fashion around the world and I couldn't limit this week's art inspired fashion post to just one Van Hamersveld image.

Christopher Kane, Resort 2012

I first met John and his wife at a gallery opening he had in Laguna Beach when I moved here a few years ago, and love the place where his iconic graphic rock and roll images merge with surf culture/art. The record jackets he designed for pop and psychedelic bands are part of our cultural zeitgeist: Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles, Exile on Main Street by The Rolling Stones, Crown of Creation by Jefferson Airplane, Skeletons in the Closet by The Grateful Dead, Hotter Than Hell by Kiss, Eat to the Beat by Blondie, and the Jimi Hendrix Shrine poster to name a few.

The Christopher Kane dress is crazy :) I like the neon trend but in moderation! lol

P.S. And those thanks in my latest post are not mine! Don't want to undeservedly take credit for them so thought I'd mention ;-) They're taking from people who took my Thankful Survey and left these thanks in the comments to it :) And I know, they're amazing! I love the one with the tea bags too, even if I don't drink my tea in tea bags! It was a super sweet one :)
