art inspired: jason martin's near by far
Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Last week I attended a small luncheon to celebrate the solo exhibition of new paintings by Jason Martin that opened at L.A. Louver. I wrote about his previous work a few years back, and was surprised to see such a colorful departure. The new works explore the "near" and "far" of pictorial space, using a paste medium on panels of wood and aluminum. It was the shimmering application of intense pigments merging with the stilled movement of the paintings that drew me in--gold, violet, turquoise and magenta pieces that range from 22x18 inches to over 6x6 feet. I enjoyed seeing the next step in his evolution and Jason told me that he's now going forward from this semi-sculptural work and bringing the color into his next series of oils. I look forward to it!

In this current fashion phase of color blocking, I find myself attracted equally if not more so, to full columns of color. There's nothing more dramatic than head-to-toe color. What do you think?
Elie Saab Ruffle Front Dress $2,350; Christian Dior Brown/Aubergine Frame Sunglasses $355; Guerlain Terracotta Blush & Sun $46; Marc Jacobs platform heels $695; Yves Saint Laurent - Rouge Pure Shine Sheer Lipstick No. 22 Cherry Sorbet $32; Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Classic Billfold $430; Brian Danielle Garnet Diamond Studs $398.

Thank you for the introduction to Martin's work! And loving all your colorful picks even though I can't wear this shade. I bought a colorblock outfit this spring in grass green. I've worn the skirt but not yet together with the top - have to wait for cooler weather - it's long sleeved.
I think i really like it - i like the idea of head to toe bizarrely by my former fashion sensibilities and i love burgundy for this winter - great post!! xx

It's definitely more sophisticated and chic! Love that painting, too!
I adore art, and love the way that bloggers like yourself draw inspiration from art to create such a stunning outfit (that is clearly a piece of art in and of itself!).
Lovely post!
i also love the full columns of color, I never totally got in to color blocking, I'm def more of a monochromatic girl!
I like the head to toe color idea! I've never done it before, so I should try! The outfit you came up with is beautiful, that color is stunning :)

So luxurious and sexy! Amazing selection! The painting is fabulous too!
hugs and kisses by Mani.
The art piece is incredible and I love the outfit with it -- you really were inspired by it. I'm a huge fan of color blocking, as long as it isn't a ton of black. A single color is so sophisticated.
I was unfamiliar with Jason Martin's work-- but it is very interesting and the sunglasses are great!
This is so beautiful it makes me want to either swoon or eat goat cheese.
Head to toe colour.....I love it!
I have to agree, the monochromatic look is so cool! I'd definitely love to experiment with that :) Really enjoyed this art inspired post and love that rich, plum color :)
I really like it. Thank you for sharing this, Mary Jo. I am craving a monochromatic look, and even better, in variations of the same colour. :)

This post was the perfect start to my morning. I am so in love with color blocking and I love the pieces you put together! (I love those stud earrings too). I normally don't do reds, but I'm pretty excited about rocking a good "bordeaux" color!

Oh, I do fancy it when one art medium inspires the art of another medium. Paintings to fashion is far more intriguing than fashion to fashion or paintings to paintings, if that makes sense. A wonderful interpretation too!
Thank you for your comment, you have such a lovely soul. And I'm terribly grateful for your patience, although I am making improvements ... it's only been 2 months and 4 days between posts, for the one I've just posted, versus my former five months!
Hope you're well.

Oh my gosh Mary Jo (actually just looked up and many others have used that phrase!) the colour of this painting is stunning, also love that swirling texture. The clothing is incredible, so rich and purply wine...my two faves
