art inspired: vik muniz, medusa marinara

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

I remember how charmed I was the first time I saw a Vik Muniz piece. The large scale, and then the content, and a closer look to see it was made of chocolate syrup and then photographed--it was love at first sight.

Originally trained as a sculptor, Vik Muniz uses unconventional materials like sugar, wire, caviar, sequins, diamonds and thread to recreate works like "The Last Supper" in chocolate syrup or Warhol's "Mona Lisa" in peanut butter and jelly, and then photographs the results. With all the tomato red hitting the fashion scene, I couldn't resist using Vik Muniz' Medusa Marinara as this week's art inspired style post.

First, that print is too incredible for words - I have never before seen anything like it. Love!

Second...swoon at this set, Mary Jo! J'adore that Alexander Wang Linen Oversized Polo...and everything else featured. I have yet to scoop up a pair of tomato red jeans myself; but I plan on doing so in the very near future - I'm thinking J Brand. :)

Art can be expressed in so many ways. About the red jeans: I have really been thinking of a pair this summer, I'm still not sure if I can pull them off, but I'm loving my little red summer dress. :) A precious clutch for a casual outfit is a fabulous idea, Mary Jo. I'm all for it. :)

The art made me laugh and think about how people tease each other not to play with food. Apparently it works very well;) I have to say I really love the outfit you pulled together here. I never thought about buying a red jeans, but this sets my mind to it for sure!

Wow, how utterly fascinating. That's probably one of the few ways I'd be comfortable with red, when softened by neutrals.
Oh I bought a cape! Nothing as wonderfully elegant as yours, more of a work horse but I love it.

Oh we have to meet in Claridges or the Beverly Hills Hotel one day!
