a room of one's own

Monday, May 9, 2011

Good morning! Hoping you had a wonderful weekend!

I spent part of my weekend in Los Angeles meeting up with different friends, including this lovely group of bloggers. It was a lot of fun and I'm going to try to make it to more meet ups in the near future!

My recent flurry of socializing and time in LA over the past few months has made me realize how much I miss being around vibrant, open, and welcoming people. The puzzle has been how to transition back with all of the tricky housing considerations to take into account--can I rent after owning? downsize after sprawling? juggle two places? etc.

The answer started to take shape when Vicki from Simply Hue asked me to guest post about studio design for her Raining Umbrellas e-course this month. While I like gazing at gorgeous images of kitchens and bathrooms as much as the next design blogger, there's something about a studio space that makes my heart go pitter-patter.

It occurred to me after a long month weighing the possibilities of leasing my house and moving back to the big city, that all I really need is a room of my own.

The thought of having to completely furnish and decorate a new place--which for some of you decorating mavens is a dream come true--to me, was feeling overwhelming, since I've hardly begun to scratch the surface of a renovating my current home. To make a long story short, I'll be moving into a cozy work space in the near future and keeping my house at the beach for down time. Any gung ho decorating types who can help me furnish my studio like the top image, please get in touch with me asap!

I find renovations overwhelming too, wallpaper and paint is the height of my ambition. I think it will be wonderful for you to have a studio to go to, I work from home part time, there are days when I have to hide when the doorbell rings!

Glad you've got it sorted. I can't wait until my husband and I build our home and I have a craft room of my own...I think he'll be excited too, he's getting sick of picking feathers and sparkles off his clothes.

The studio is such a great idea. I sometimes work from home and I know how I would love to have a studio to go to instead. Spacious, bright, with white walls, wooden floors and large windows and a beautiful desk-this is my idea of inspiring work place. If I come across some interesting interiors I'll certainly forward them to you. :) Hope you have a great week, Mary Jo! Ada

A studio ... great idea! Lovely and not overwhelming. It's funny, I mentioned to my husband yesterday that if family and obligations wasn't a consideration, I think it would be fun to get rid of everything we don't absolutely LOVE, pick a place we think we'd love and go live there one year. At the end of the year, we'd do the same thing again. Maybe one year, live in downtown Chicago, renting a loft. In another, go to Charleston SC ... you get the idea. If you fall in love with a certain place, nothing says you HAVE to leave, but the rule would be that if you don't LOVE it after a year, you must move on. He loved the idea so much that he's talked about it for 24 hours ;) I may end up doing just that at some point! :)

Again, so great meeting you! And I don't know what you're talking about -- I think you look great in your photos and should do more outfit posts :)

I'm not the best at decorating, but I sure do love looking at photos of neat decor! Good luck with the new workspace, and be sure to show us photos when it's finished :)

Honestly, I love to daydream about new spaces and decorating them, but when it comes down to it, I have no clue where to start. I guess with a simple good piece that I love, and then you build around that, right?

And I love to hear you got to meet up with other LA bloggers. My favorite thing about blogging has been getting to "meet" and meet incredible people like you, Mary Jo.

I've been slowly taking over the family garage as my studio. The kids still like doing their homework in there, but during the day it's MINE. I love it. I can spread out all my projects, leave them there and come back later. It is a necessity for a creative person to have a space just to create. And I think decorating one would be fun and not at all overwhelming! Great idea. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Love,
Heather
