art inspired: philippe halsman, dali atomicus
Tuesday, May 24, 2011

In the late 40s Halsman started collaborating with Salvador Dali. This photo of three flying cats, a bucket of thrown water, and Salvador Dali in mid air took 28 attempts, and was not touched up. The title of the photo references Dalí's painting, Leda Atomica, which can be seen to the right of the photograph. The black and white, the playfulness, and of course Dali's great black suit inspired this week's art to fashion post.

Clockwise: Bausch & Lomb Cat Eye Frames, vintage 1950s; Theory Orencia tie-front silk blouse $235; Dannijo|Coco silver-plated Swarovski crystal ring $245; Deborah Lippmann Bring on the Bling Nail Color; Stella McCartney Velez tailored wool pants $525; Stella McCartney Iris wool-twill blazer $1,175; Jimmy Choo cosmic stamped croc leather pumps $775; BLACK MUSTACHE NECKLACE $18 sourpussclothing.com.

That silk blouse is just gorgeous - I love love the ties! :)
The meticulous process photographs like these once took is impressive ... today, most would simply stitch together such stunts, in an editing program. I like the sliver of a man we see at left, (maybe who threw the chair into frame) ... I don't know if it was intentional or accidental for him to be shown at all, but I like that small detail, the little glimpse ...
Belated thanks for your comment and thoughtful sentiments!

The juxtaposition of two great artists results in this fantastic photograph. Dali was a genius, he's had an enormous influence on so many forms of art and not only. I remember the dream scene in Hitchcock's Spelbound, created by him or his collaboration on numerous films of Buñuel. I love the tie-front detail on the silk blouse, it brings a relaxed touch to the elegant outfit. I did feel the need of a color blocking break. :)
I have actually never seen the photograph before. Thank you so much for introducing me to it... I am familiar with Halsman's other portraits, but this is amazing!
I love how you captured the humor in your translation with the mustache necklace!

Hi lovey. Been busy the past couple of days with my dad in visiting me for some daughter-dad time and it was lovely. Today I'm back in the studio taking a few minutes to stop by some favorite blogs before I start work ... happy Wednesday to you! xoxo
Love that it took them 28 times and makes the photo so much more special, the cat flying through the water is amazing. There is a young girl who just won a photo competition - a photo of her being Wendy about to fly out the window - and she bounced on the bed for hours just to get to the level of the window. Better than tricks. Also fantastic outfit - love that shirt - and must get myself a 'tache. My friend has one on a stick
Hey there thanks for your comment on my blog. How rude to just take your camera! But luckily you got yours back too! We are so lucky, really! Some people would have just picked it and left :(
