art inspired: georgia o'keeffe, cow's skull with calico roses

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Georgia O'Keeffe's beautiful hands always struck me, along with the boldness of her many nude photos for Stieglitz, who she posed for long before they were married. Now, I look at her work and I'm taken by her many skulls, bones, and the unrelenting look at the passage of life and death. I can't help but marvel at how brave and independent she was to take off for northern New Mexico, spending long periods of time alone painting in remote conditions where the wind was so strong she would struggle to keep the canvas on an easel and the sun was so hot she would rest underneath her car in the afternoons. Not only was Georgia O'Keeffe one of the first women artists to be widely celebrated in the U.S., but eventually she became synonymous with the American Southwest, which prior to her work, had only been celebrated by male artists.

1931 - Cow's Skull With Calico Roses

Since it's officially time to break out your white dresses, this week's art inspired fashion post draws from the creamy whites of Cow's Skull With Calico Roses. The slash of black in the otherwise neutral tones of this painting gives a sense of heightened drama; I think it works for fashion too. Not to mention, there's something so romantic about an off-white lace dress for summer...

Another lesson of art. I'm looking forward to these posts every week, Mary Jo. :) An off-white lace dress with a black ribbon belt would be an inspiring, beautiful choice for a romantic summer night. :)

Georgia O'Keeffe has long been a hero of mine. Because of the risks she took and her pursuit of passion.

As far as the look goes--- I drool a little bit everytime I see a vintage Chanel bag.... I am like Pavlov's dog.

It is a rather steamy day here so yes to anything lacy and loose...and yes to any of Georgia's artworks.

She does have beautiful hands - you're so right. My friend paid her way through Uni with hand modeling and beautiful hands are rare. Love her paintings, this one is so creamy and romantic, yet its a cow skull. So clever. The skull necklace and lace dress are so cool, Inspired choices on your part.

I love love love this outfit and would wear it in a moment! Beautifully put together, Mary Jo... I have always wanted those lovely Chanel sandals and was thrilled and surprised (because I don't normally shop there) when Bebe came out with a similar pair. I usually don't like buying something so close, but couldn't resist. Of course the quality would never be the same or the design for that matter, but every time I wear them, I am reminded of Chanel... and will enjoy them, hoping to one day buy the real pair :)
