art inspired: elmer bischoff, two bathers

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Elmer Bischoff was my life drawing professor at U.C. Berkeley. I was still a teenager and remember the highlight of that class being the day he pinned one of my charcoal drawings to the wall as an example that he liked. Even now, it's hard to connect the deep vibrant colors and emotional quality of his paintings with the gruff man who caused many of us to quake in our sneakers on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This week's art inspired fashion post takes it's cue from his 1960 painting, "Two Bathers". A member of the first generation of Bay Area Figurative painters, who, along with arists such as Richard Diebenkorn and David Park, adapted abstract expressionism to address reality based subjects, Elmer Bischoff's work is part of the collection at the The Smithsonian, The Hirshhorn, The Phillips Collection, the Kemper Museum of Modern Art, the de Young Museum, and many other major museums. So tell me...what do you think?

Love how the navy blues and greens offset the pastels in the dress. Plus love that floppy hat, can never figure out how toe wear those!

What a way to finish the look: that lovely hat! I usually don't wear colourful prints, but there are some items that simply leave me speechless: this dress is one of them. Have a beautiful day, Mary Jo! xo

The dress is the perfect interpretation of the painting.

I think the hat may look too big on me (I can look consumed by clothing easily!), but I think it is an adorable spring look!!!

Again, love you art picks! I would buy the ring and yesterday I just bought the nailpolish colour you are showing a fewe days ago and loving it. In my mind I named it: 'Nail Polish: Van Gogh" (because it's the exact colour he uses in his paintings, aquamarin (what is it in English?). Unfortunately the brand didn't give it that name, but something simple like nailpolish number 765. Haha...
