art inspired: david hockney, a bigger splash

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

I'm back again with trustyourstyle's new art inspired series. Growing up in Southern California pool culture, A Bigger Splash made me giddy with recognition when I first saw it in high school. David Hockney is considered to be the most well known British painter of this century, and it's ironic that his ipad drawings are now undergoing the same kind of debate and criticism that Warhol's screen printed paintings first received--is it really a painting? Is it really art? But back to A Bigger Splash--it was painted while Hockney was teaching at my undergrad alma mater, U.C. Berkeley.

wow...Hockney was teaching at Berkeley? I didn't know about that. I read "The Blue Guitar: Etchings By David Hockney Who Was Inspired By Wallace Stevens Who Was Inspired By Pablo Picasso" and saw Jack Hazan's film A Bigger plash 3 times :-) This is why I'm so glad to see your post today :-) Many hugs to you, Mary Jo

I would love to have something bright turquoise blue right now, so that shirt is really doing it for me. Unfortunately I must keep looking. So far I haven't found one.

I like the way you used the art as inspiration!

Love,
Heather

I never tire of Hockney and this splash one is one of my faves. Love how you've drawn from it with the nude colours and brighter blues. That top is gorgeous, you are so clever at styling...
