something in the way she smoothes

One of the highlights of my birthday week was getting a couture Brazilian Blowout by Aaron Johles at McMillan Canale Salon in Malibu. I think it's the best hair treatment I've ever had! My hair had become so damaged over the past few years as a beauty editor getting constant highlights, lowlights, and everything in between, that I stopped covering hair for awhile to let it repair. It wasn't until I had a Japanese deep conditioning treatment followed by a Brazilian blowout that it snapped back to the glossy smooth hair that I vaguely remembered. In case you're looking for something nice to do for your hair-and who isn't?--I thought I'd leave you with some top notch tips on getting your hair shiny smooth.

There's a lot of conflicting information out there about Brazilian Blowouts, and Aaron was kind enough to share his philosophy on what to look for:
Find someone that will do a Japanese deep conditioning a week or two before the Brazilian, this increases the elasticity of the hair and an ideal prep before a Brazilian. Also if the Japanese conditioning treatments work fine then don't go with the Brazilian, Less is more. Be patient, If the hair is really damaged, its best to do a haircut first and Brazilian second. So it's important to find a place that can do the best conditioning treatment in the world, and that is a blunt hair cut. A blunt cut is a wonderful prep before a Brazilian. A fresh start for the cuticle.
Not all Brazilian Blowouts are performed equally, as you can now get a Brazilian Blow out at Fantastic Sam's or a high end salon. Look for someone that will use a boar bristle round brush {we favor Aaron's fab Ibiza brush} to be used after the product solution has been applied and before using the flat Iron. A quality blow out with a boar bristle round brush can create a memory in the Brazilian that will give it a more natural look and feel and the boar bristles do an ideal job of distributing the product solution deeper into the cuticle with the aid of the hair dryer. Getting a blow out or booking a blow out prior to getting the Brazilian can be a way to test the hairdresser to see if you like the way he or she executed the blow dry and if you want the person to do the actual Brazilian Blow dry. If you want volume, suggest not putting the solution 1-2 inches from the scalp, the product shouldn't be put on the scalp anyway. Rinsing the solution is safer than leaving without rinsing, since there is a chemical residue on the hair.
So you heard it from a Brazilian Blowout expert. Thanks Aaron! You can book an appointment with Aaron {he's also does amazing cuts for both women and men} at 310-993-7808.
And if there's any doubt that smooth straight hair is sticking around for fall, check out Justin Wu's feel-good Fall '11 video for lanecrawford.com. I promise, it will make you feel happy.
