nina garcia on fashion and style

Friday, August 13, 2010

Today I'm excited because Marie Claire fashion director and best-selling author, Nina Garcia, has dropped by TrustYourStyle!

Nina+Garcia+0

Most of you recognize Nina as a "Project Runway" judge, and know that she had a long tenure as fashion director at Elle, but did you know that Nina has been involved in fashion since the early 90s when she was Marc Jacobs' head designer?

NinaGarciasLookBook

Her latest book, Nina Garcia's Look Book: What To Wear For Every Occasion, is a must-read for style lovers, packed with Nina's answers to the most commonly asked fashion questions. I'm partial to Ruben Toledo's illustrations which are fabulous, and give the book the feel of a designer's sketch book. I find myself looking at them again and again.

Hope you enjoy the interview!

mj: What is your fashion philosphy?

nina: How you wear an ensemble can open doors, create opportunity, and make life a dazzling adventure. Never let you or the world down by not living up to your style standards. Once you understand what your clothes are saying about you and what you want them to say, you will be a style virtuoso. I would describe my own style as classic, structural, and modern. I love clean lines and interesting details.

mj: Who are the people who most influence your style?

nina: My mother was my very first fashion icon. She had an amazing ability to put together classic pieces with really unusual accessories. Honestly, I can't remember a time when I wasn't mesmerized by clothes and glamour.

mj: Who are some of your favorite designers and why?

nina: I appreciate timeless, high-quality, enduring fashion--so I love Lanvin, Chanel, Phoebe Philo, and Michael Kors.

mj: What up and coming designers do you have your eye on?

nina: There are so many talented designers coming out of London in particular. I love Louis Goldin, Erdem, and Preen.

mj: What are your favorite cities for satorial spying?

nina: Of course the obvious fashion meccas: New York, London, and Paris are amazing for people watching. I also like to see what people are wearing on the street in smaller, more out-of-the-way-places where everyone's not so "in the know"--that's where you can find those hidden gems.

Thanks so much Nina for stopping by! I know your new book will be a great success!

Fantastic interview, MaryJo! Nina is such a fashion star and I love watching her on Project Runway. It's fantastic she tries to get to out-of-the-way places to see what people are wearing there. Sometimes good style comes from people who aren't following any trends.
Have a great weekend!
