bagpoor on fall's handbag riches

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Today I have a treat for you! Michael St. James, one of a handful of couture bag bloggers, who writes the fabulous Bag Poor, has dropped by to talk about the latest bag trends. Michael has a great nose for the best arm candy, so listen up if you're in the mood for a new fall bag!

michael: This Fall, fashion returns to an era of tradition and luxury. I was most inspired by Louis Vuitton’s collection. It transported us to the ladylike sixties, when women embraced sophistication and elegance. In challenging economic times, it’s important to invest in classic handbags that will never go out of style.

mj: Do you have a must-have bag for fall?

michael: My must-have bag for Fall is, without question, the Mulberry Neely. The classic shape and size has been updated with spongy patent leather that will certainly stand the test of time.

mj: what do you think about the little bags with long straps?

michael: I’m not in love with the super tiny square bags hanging from outrageously long straps, as seen from Proenza Schouler. They’re far from aesthetically pleasing, especially on fuller figured women, and their small capacity renders them completely useless.

Let’s move on to the other major trend for Fall, shall we? Excessive opulence was all over the catwalks this season and, contrary to popular belief, I felt that it was completely appropriate. Fashion is the perfect escape from today’s financial hardships, which leads me to my absolute favorite bag for Fall. The VBH privé clutch is truly a breathtaking work of art. As if the glimmering paillettes weren’t extraordinary enough, it also features an alligator flap. Other luxurious trends include fur, leopard print, and exotic skins.

Have fun with fashion this Fall ladies, and thanks for giving me an opportunity to share my fabulosity with your readers Mary Jo!

My pleasure Michael, thanks so much for stopping by! I have to say that I love that sparkly VBH privé clutch! ~ mj

What a beautiful post! And perfect timing, I might add, as my birthday is just around the corner, and a new handbag is in order. I'm completely taken with the Mulberry one right now, and just adore the color and details... Thank you for the insight and inspiration!

No problem Sarah! The Mulberry Neely is gorgeous. Although the nude variation is my favorite, be advised that it also comes in red and navy, so you may have a tough choice ahead of you.

I actually love little bags with long straps, though I see how they could look disproportional at times... Don't suppose I think about it too much though, I mainly carry either a leather satchel I found out in the mountains of Morocco or this beloved tote bag I have (that at this point, is very dirty from being taken all over the place)!

Belated thanks for your comment! ♥
