knot today

The gorgeous May Lindstrom/Next Model Management in my black knot dress

The knot detail was one of the first things I worked out in my line when I started putting it together a few years back--it's based on a vintage detail from a piece from the late 30s, which is the vintage clothing era I collect. It was a lot harder to perfect than it might look. It took a few passes to make the knot lay down just so--translate: tres tres expensive...Yes, Christopher Bailey came out with a dress that had knots all over it last season and it just about killed me. That, and when the much bigger designer my (old) patternmaker worked with (can't say, but there's not that many in LA so it wouldn't be hard to figure out) suddenly came out with a knot detail on a couture wedding dress last season after same patternmaker had charged me handsomely to work out all the kinks in the pattern. Then there was the French patternmaker I worked with who made sure to display a dress form with the knot top that the designer Tadashi she had worked with had done, just to underscore the fact that she thought I wasn't that original. But I refused to give up the knot. In fact, I went and put it on my new bowling bag and doctor's bag. Moral of the story: do knot give up!

Lots of love and thanks to my sweet blogger friends who were kind enough to mention my new line today:

The talented Dallas Shaw at Dilly Dallas
My lovely and supportive friend Christina at You Can Call Me Chris.
Dear sweet Jackie at Sweetie Pie Pumpkin Noodle

Thank you so much ladies! What would I do without you?
