Alexander McQueen via Numero Homme #17

In a day in age when everyone, even the crazy fashion industry is so bloody pc (okay, that's just me being dramatic with my really bad fake English accent)...it's nice to know there are still eccentric creative types who aren't afraid to say what they think (however offensive it might be to others). Not sure why I find this oddly comforting, but I do.

In the latest issue of Numero Homme #17 via fashionologie, Alexander McQueen speaks his mind (click here to read). And I do agree with what he has to say about looking around--it's so not conducive to creating anything interesting--not to mention staying away from the whole fashion scene thing. Alber Elbaz basically said the same thing last week to The New Yorker.

Now for the flip side. There is a new documentary out about Valentino, my all-time favorite designer. I actually like the step back that this interview on Charlie Rose makes you take--that the portrait is limited and defined by the point of view of the filmmaker. Apparently he decided to make the story about their love story, not the clothes. I could not rip myself away and sat and watched the whole hour interview this morning--it's really quite something if you are remotely a Valentino fan. Not to mention that I am in love with Giancarlo Giammetti.

And finally, Rachel Ashwell has been on my mind of late. I drop by her blog every so often. Lately she's been chronicalling the closing of Shabby Chic. She lost her mother this past year, during the time my father was sick, and I could so relate to how she was expressing herself. I admire what she started and how she took a concept and created a lifestyle specific to her vision. It's a little sad, but worth reading the latest post just to get to the email her daughter Lily sent her. So sweet.

I guess my point in this post is, no matter what your style is, trust it. Trust it. Trust it. It's the way.

I loved these three entries about designers and your special note at the very end, it's tricky learning to trust yourself, trust your style. it seems to sing when you do, though!

I always think of you Julia, as someone who really does trust their feelings and lives according to what makes you happy.

Great post Mary Jo! I love that you focus on getting people to trust their style. I think that all designers have to trust their style in order to succeed. It's the only way!
