more color for thought

Back in November I came across the most beautiful mood boards by Anne Sage of City Sage and I asked her if I could run some of them (click here to see what first caught my eye). We started a blog world/email friendship that I am very grateful for and when mulling over my color choices for my Fall 09 debut clothing line, I couldn't believe it when Anne asked me if I'd like her to make up one of her beautiful mood board collages for me.

At the time, there were several Diebenkorn paintings that I was using for color inspiration, and I was trying to figure out how to integrate a certain cobalt blue into my line. Taking my Diebenkorn images, Anne got back to me with the collages below. Aren't they just gorgeous?!

Many things happen in production. Sometimes it's as simple as the fabric you want to use in a particular color not being available, so you make do with another. Other times you just wake up and think no, it's not working for me. I'm going to do this instead of that. And just like that, blue left my color palette. But I love having these beautifully worked mood boards to remind me where I started. Funny, when Anne first sent this over a few months back, the image I was least attracted to, (the girl in the pink wig) is now most indicative of the spirit of the line. Although some might not see it because the clothes themselves are structural and all about the cut, with a soft, even delicate look to them, for me there is something else going on, a way of being in the clothes that I hope to convey. I just love that images can be more than a visual, they also can have a life of their own and capture ephemeral states of mind that can otherwise be difficult to articulate. Thank you Anne, I am so touched by all the thoughtfulness you put into this project!

Thanks so much Mary Jo for sharing these with your readers! It's so funny about the pink wig---because I feel exactly the same way. When I was doing the boards, she was in, then out, then in, then out, and almost didn't make the cut until the last minute when I just decided to go for it. And you're so right about the spirit she captures---I'm glad it worked out! Isn't it funny how sometimes the things we are drawn to least in the beginning end up being the ones that stay with us most in the end?

It was my pleasure to put these together and I can't WAIT to see the collection!

Thanks Anne! And yes, always it seems, the things we're not sure about, even repelled by--often that becomes the cornerstone or the key that has to be unlocked. Sorry for the metaphors, but it's early and I'm still in non-linear mode!

They are absolutely breathtaking. Anne is really fantastic. I can't wait to see what you do with your collection! And funny enough, the first picture that drew my attention was the one with the pink wig.
