After

This corner of my sitting room (as seen last week on my 10 Fav Things list--sorry if you're sick of seeing it already!) is now posted over at Apartment Therapy, my favorite of all the design blogs, in their Roomarks: Inspirational Interiors section. So fun!

I love this corner of the house because it's comfy and also because it was so challenging to decorate--though it might not look like it, it took a lot of extra thought. Half the room is a small but great kitchen that came with every amenity on my wish list, and the other half is a sitting room--the space was literally cut up by a doorway and recessed wall that left me with only 76 inches for a couch. Try finding a comfy 76" couch! Not to mention that while 5x8 rugs are just a little too small in front of a 76" couch, 8x10 rugs, the next standard size up, are too large and hang out awkwardly into the space dividing the room. All I can say is my trusty measuring tape saved me lots of time in the long run!

Since I didn't bother to clean up my mess of magazines for the photo, I was a little worried that this room might not make the best impression over at Apartment Therapy...so I was shocked to get a ton of very sweet emails asking about the furniture, paint, etc. I thought I'd just post the info here for anyone who's interested:

I hired pro painters who used Dunn-Edwards--and chose Covered in Platinum for this room with a lighter complimentary gray, Silver Spoon, on the ceiling. The rest of the house is painted in Silver Spoon, but I wanted a slightly darker gray for the sitting room/kitchen area.
The Magino coffee table is by Karim Rashid for Umbra.
The mirror and daybed are from West Elm
Gray pillows and folded blanket (I keep tucked behind the pillows) from Restoration Hardware
Marimekko Kulkue throw pillow from FinnishGifts.com
The rug is Walking on Clouds by FLOR.
Pink & Yellow B-shit toys on table by SuperDeux
Endless Summer by John Van Hamersveld
Lust for Life litho a gift from Mark Beam
Plate by Jeffrey Fulvimari

Before

Just for fun, I thought I'd post the 'Before' shot. Sorry the quality is terrible, it's from the flyer I picked up when the house was for sale. Despite the fact that the previous owner had a thing for green with red accents(!) and most of the windows had no window coverings, I still saw lots of potential. It's a different view of the room--the fireplace, flat screen, and crown molding are pretty much the only things that still remain. I covered the strange port hole window with the round mirror and brought in the daybed, which I placed near the back wall to maximize the space--the previous owner had an awkward walkway of wasted space behind the couch. I also had wide white wooden shutters installed throughout the house for more privacy, including the corner windows pictured above. The old-fashioned fireplace screen and fake wood etc. was replaced with clear 1" fire pit glass--it gives out 5x more heat and has no asbestos or other toxic chemicals unlike the fake wood. I'm thinking of replacing the inside of the fireplace with a stainless steel version, so it may be awhile before I have an updated photo of this view...

I'm out the door early today but will meet you back here tomorrow and we'll get to the rest of Milan Fashion Week soon, I promise!
