food (and music) for thought

Thanksgiving always makes me think of my long-time yoga teacher, Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, who for the past 15 years since I've been her student, has always hosted a Thanksgiving breakfast (organic/vegan) for everyone who showed up to class Thanksgiving morning. She's doing it again this year (click here for more info) but even if you're no where near L.A., you can get the feeling by downloading Gurmukh's Playlist at yogajournal.com. It's truly a great mix and even includes a track from another one of my oldest and most favorite yoga teachers, Guru Singh. I promise you, it's the perfect way to bliss out while you cook up Thanksgiving goodies...
I owe more than I can ever express to Gurmukh and her teachings and kindness. I thought I'd leave you with a small excerpt from an interview I did with Gurmukh a few years ago:
People are constantly searching for the answers in the wrong places. Through Kundalini Yoga and Meditation we teach people to go inside, where their own beauty and radiance lies, and through self-appreciation, to bring it out. We teach them to relax within themselves and rather than judge themselves for what they are not, rather than compare and contrast themselves with outside standards set by Hollywood on billboards which only make women try to be something they are not, we help extend the inner radiance of a person. Through the breath, a person's radiant body is increased, which makes a person look brighter. Through the yogic postures we help reduce a woman's inner stress, and a relaxed person is a more attractive than an uptight person. When a woman is better able to flow with things she is more able to let the universal energy flow through her as a graceful representation of the Infinite. So the mind changes from criticism for that which isn't to a flow of gratitude for what is, including all facets of herself.
