MEDITATION ON PEARS

I made a Pear Crumble for Thanksgiving and as I peeled all the pears, I started thinking about what a beautiful shape the pears were and how I had never stopped to think about what pear-shaped really meant.

If we believe the fashion media, to be pear-shaped is a fate worse than death. I've had a fair number of women grimace during fittings and confide that they're "pear shaped" and can't wear anything tight, straight, fitted, etc. Why, in a country where the average size woman wears a size 14, is 5'3" and weighs 152 pounds, do we make such a fuss about having a pear shaped body?

Hoping you all had a great Thanksgiving!

In celebration of the Pear Shape, here's my favorite Pear Crumble recipe:

Filling:
3.5 pounds fresh fruit (if using pears, apples, or stone fruit, slice the fruit)
sugar to taste: 1/2 cup to 1.5 cups depending on fruit's sweetness
3 tablespoons flour

Combine the fruit, sugar, and flour and place in a buttered ovenproof casserole.

Topping:
1.5 cups of flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
8 ounces butter (keep chilled for flakiness)
1/2 cup of nuts of your choice (walnuts, almond, pecons, pistachios, etc.)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Combine the flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon and zest. Gently work the butter with fingers until the mixture is combined but still crumbly. Add nuts just to combine.

Place the crisp topping on the fruit. Bake until top is browned and filling is bubbly, about 30-45 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
